Aged and Community Care Industry Research

ACSA Research Project

What are you seeing?

Share with us what you see …fill in an ACSA questionnaire and tell us your view of the aged and community services industry.

McGregor Tan Research, in conjunction with Aged and Community Services Australia (ACSA), your peak body for aged and community care, is conducting research into current perceptions and expectations of the aged care industry.

As the leading peak body representing two thirds of the aged and community care sector, ACSA Federation has the opportunity to use its significant and influential voice to help shape perceptions of the industry.

The perception of the aged and community care industry is an issue of concern for many ACSA members.   We want to better understand what that image is and where it comes from.

Only by having the full picture can we work together to ensure it has the reputation it truly deserves.  Please take a few moments to complete a questionnaire and share what you see.

Provider Support

In order for ACSA to get the full picture and use the research effectively we need the help of all providers to complete a questionnaire and encourage staff, families and residents to also complete the questionnaire.  Your support is critical to this research.

Your Privacy is Protected

McGregor Tan Research is an independent social and market research company who will collate the questionnaires and your opinions will only appear in a combined report. No views will be directly attributed to any individuals.

If you have any questions or concerns please contact Heather Stevens or Annette Glenister-Walker at ACSA on 03-9686 3460.

ACSA: Leading in Aged and Community Care

Aged and Community Services Australia (ACSA) is the national peak body for not-for-profit, church and charitable providers of aged and community care services.  ACSA represents around 1,200 organisations providing housing, supported accommodation and community care services to over 700,000 older Australians, people with a disability and their carers.

As the leading peak body representing two thirds of the aged and community care sector, ACSA has the opportunity to use its significant and influential voice to help shape perceptions of the industry.

ACSA also has strong ties with the corporate sector particularly since developing national partnerships with seven large corporations serving the aged and community care industry.  Combined with six State and Territory associations that make up the ACSA Federation, ACSA has a powerful reach at the state and national level.

The image of the aged and community care industry is an issue of concern for ACSA members.
The industry sees aged care as attracting largely negative media attention, feeding myths and fear.  We are concerned that this coverage causes unnecessary anxiety for older people in general, family members who have relatives in aged care services or are considering this option, and staff working in the industry.

Most media coverage concentrates on residential aged care, with community care attracting very little media attention.  When retirement villages are in the spotlight the focus is frequently on financial aspects and/or luxury lifestyles which in reality few can afford.

The impact of such negative stories is seen to link to other broader problems that impact on the future of the industry:

  • workforce pressures, including shortages of qualified people being attracted to the industry;
  • morale of existing staff; and
  • undermining industry attempts to secure appropriate support from government, corporate sector and the broader community.

ACSA has determined that it will address this issue by undertaking a project to:

  • research the views and perceptions of the public and other key stakeholders; and
  • design and implement a strategy to support the industry.

This project will be undertaken in stages.  This research relates to Stage 1 of this project.

A Reference Group consisting of industry representatives and ACSA staff has been established to guide the Project.

A further questionnaire of the General Public will also be undertaken via a telephone survey.
