Aged care transition places a good move: CCOA
"Transition care is an important aspect in caring for older Australians who need assistance leaving hospital and resuming their lives," CCOA said.
"Enforced hospital stays due to a lack of support services and timely access to residential care facilities has been an ongoing difficulty for thousands of older people for too long.
"We applaud the Government's commitment to have the hospital and aged care sectors working together in the best interests of older people.
"A strong partnership must be developed between our sector, hospitals, other health services and the Government to help people, including older people get the services they need when they need them
"Providers of community and residential aged care services understand the care and support older people need and have the expertise to smooth the transition from hospital."
CCOA said transition care, including shortage of places, was just one factor in a range of compelling and confronting issues surrounding the care and support of older Australians.
"We await the Government's announcement of urgent reforms for aged care as part of its health agenda and look forward to working with the Government. A sustainable aged care system offering easy access and quality choices, will assist older people maintain good health and avoid unnecessary hospitalization.
"Our ageing population can't wait forever."
CCOA comprises 11 national organisations providing community and residential aged care and housing.
