Health and Welfare of Australia's Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples, 2005

The AIHW has released Health & Welfare of Australia's Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples 2005. The Report covers for the first time information on disability in the Indigenous population. In 2002, indigenous people were at least twice as likely as non-indigenous people to have a profound or severe core activity limitation. The earlier onset of disability or long-term health conditions indicates the comparatively higher need for service provision for indigenous people with a disability at younger ages. This is reflected in the use of aged care services. Of those admitted to permanent or respite residential care, almost 29% were under 65 years, compared with 8% among other Australians. Of all clients receiving home and community care, 18% of indigenous clients were aged 75 years or over compared with 57% of other clients.
