Viability Supplement We Make Do
Community care is, and will continue to be, the foundation for the support of our expanding ageing population. Community care services are extremely important in rural and remote areas in maintaining older people in their local communities. The costs of providing services in rural
and remote areas are higher than in metropolitan areas due to a number of operating variables including travel, food and staffing costs. These costs were largely ignored in community care until 2006 when the Howard Government introduced the Community Care Viability Supplement
(CCVS) at Aged and Community Services Australia’s (ACSA’s) urging. The CCVS was the companion supplement to the Residential Care Viability Supplement granted some years previous. Home and Community Care (HACC) programs are not yet covered by a viability supplement.
